The pencil tapped lightly on the side of the desk as she stared into the middle distance in an unfocused way. Looking down she smirked at her creation, a picture of a very sleek looking black cat with a thick white stripe running down the length of its back. It had purple eyes that seemed to shine, and she thought to herself that she had taken the wrong course.

Beginnings
He awoke with a start, his arms flung out to protect himself and a silent scream on his lips. He was drenched in horrible cold sweat, the kind that can only be induced by a nightmare. He breathed in slowly, half expecting the salty tang of sea water to fill his mouth and lungs to drown him as the sea would have. Fortunately the breath was long and deep and he savoured it as his head cleared of his nights ordeal. Staring at the ceiling he stretched out his arms loosening the tight muscles, then rubbed his hand over the stubble that had accumulated on his chin, yawning as the stubble rasped against his fingers. He slept fitfully; he was having the dream again. In the dream he was looking down, the vast oceans around him reaching to every horizon. Among the ever rolling sea life was evident, off to his right there was a dolphin breaking the water to stare in his direction in an unfocused way, and in the distance a flock of birds could be seen, so far away they were seen only as little v-shapes on the horizon, most likely off to find somewhere to roost in the seemingly limitless expanse.
